Dressing Up Like Hemingway

Key West has the best of everything to offer to its vacationers. It has great beaches, friendly inns and several bed and breakfast accommodations. The open and welcoming spirit of Key West has transformed the region into a Mecca of gay and lesbian rights in the country.

Most young couples enjoy a visit to Key West because the vacation combines the best of beaches with the best of history and literature. Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West. It was from here that he wrote his famous books "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "To Have and Have Not" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro."

One a year, Ernest Hemingway comes back to life in Key West. Hemingway Days consists of a series of parties and events, including a look-alike contest. The look-alike contest is most popular among young couples as the look-alikes participate in an arm-wrestling contest and a Key Lime pie eating contest, to the delight of the crowd.

However, there are several other entertaining contests that young couples can participate in including a marlin fishing contest and a unique take on one of Hemingway's favorite activities, the Running of the Bulls. No Hemingway Festival is complete without a bit of literature. Neither is this one organized in Key West. Hemingway's grand-daughter Lorain offers a few thousand dollars in award money to the best short stories entered in the Lorain Hemingway Short Story Competition.

It was while living in Key West that Hemingway gained the nickname "Papa." "Papa" Hemingway lived in a Spanish Colonial home on Whitehead Street during the 1930's. His life was filled with a lot of adventure and travel. It is this spirit that the Hemingway Festival at Key West captures.

According to historians, Hemingway spent most of his mornings in Key West writing his books and most evenings exploring the city, meeting people and deep-sea fishing.

Key West is a very magical place. There is a Key West attraction for every person. Young couples who are avid fishers will love Key West because some of the finest saltwater fishing is here. However, even those who are not avid fishers will admire the thrill of sight casting to tarpon as they cross a beautiful sandy flat in the Key West backcountry.
