Key west treasures

If there was only one reason for people to go to Key West , it would be for the great seafood at any of the local friendly restaurants. Talented young chefs have settled in Key West, contributing to the area's Cuban feel, but the island's tropical climate and proximity to Cuba have both played unmistakable roles in the formation of Key West. Florida citrus, fresh seafood, and great tropical fruit are on all the local menus, as are black beans, yucca, and other Cuban and Caribbean staples. Also, the many Cuban-style cafes and friendly restaurants are both affordable alternatives and give the Caribbean vacations the right touch.  Be sure to visit one of these little cafes, even if it's just to take a break and have a cup of oh-so-strong Cuban coffee in between the events in the travel guide.

Seafood is the order of the day in Florida, and Key West is certainly no exception. Florida lobster, stone crab, shrimp, it can be assured it's all fresh in any of the friendly restaurants.  Fresh seafood is a staple for every restaurant in town. It also adds to resort hotel menus as well.  No resort vacation would be complete without Key West seafood. Crab and lobster season usually runs from August to March, but emergency harvesting restrictions and bad weather can affect availability. Whatever a young couple desires, if the first choice is not available, the best advice is to get whatever else is fresh that day. Should the vacationer be from a part of the world where deep-fried seafood is the norm, fresh catch broiled or grilled could be a nice change. It is surprising how much flavor is missed when beaches resort menus are full of fried food.

So much key lime pie has been made outside of the Florida Keys, that it seems few people know the real taste from the chain restaurant version anymore. Authentic key lime pie is made from authentic key limes (about the size of a large egg with a remarkably tart pulp), and the traditional version of the pie is easy to identify: It has yellow (not green!) custard in a graham-cracker crust and tastes like nothing else. Some friendly restaurants close at certain times of the year (they need a vacation, too) but if your favorite place happens to be closed...simply explore. In Key West, another restaurant -- or bar -- is always just around the corner. Many vacation accommodations will either have the pie, or know where to find the real pie.

When the beach paradise has been enjoyed with a day on the water, dined in one of the exquisite friendly restaurants and danced the night away, the lure of anyone's tropical bed and breakfast should be strong. There are so many bed and breakfast accommodations, there is sure to be one for everyone that will suit their tastes just right.  It's worth taking the time and doing a little research to find the perfect bed and breakfast lodging.

There are many things to do to make Caribbean vacations more enjoyable than by traveling outside the travel guide. Of all the accommodations Florida has to offer, Key West is surely on the top of the list as far as luxury travel goes.
