Overcome Obstacles And Travel

More and more gay men and lesbians are traveling alone. There is a plethora of lesbian accommodations and gay-friendly opportunities for gay women who want to enjoy a lesbian paradise.

There are hotels for the Key West lesbian, or the Caribbean lesbian.  Whatever your pleasure, there are opportunities available to help you enjoy a beach paradise.  Perhaps you are single or "temporarily single" due to partners' or friends' incompatible vacation schedule; perhaps you are traveling on business or are looking for that perfect "vacation relation."

Or maybe you have the time and money to take a vacation, but no one to travel with. Then there are times you may have the option of traveling with others but simply prefer to travel alone.  Traveling solo is the most rewarding way to explore someplace new. You dictate your own schedule, and there is no one else to accommodate during your trip. When you travel solo, you can really get away, commune with yourself, read, write and pursue other creative endeavors.

Unfortunately, the travel market is not geared toward single travelers. For one thing, the vast majority of gay or straight tour packages, accommodations, cruises and the like are priced for "double occupancy" and require additional fees for those who are not sharing the cost of their sleeping accommodations with another traveler.

Besides organized travel and lodging options, dining and other activities are also primarily geared to couples or groups. As gay men and women, we often face further obstacles as single travelers especially in mainstream destinations where accommodations, dining and nightlife are not necessarily gay friendly. Although people might feel stigmatized who take part in this society, they should not.

The approval of the word lesbian as applied to a larger group of people could be infiltrated into society through the media.  If the idea were spurred by theorists, such as Lorde, and carried out into a social context, such as, a class on “Literature and Sexuality,” and a person in the class were to have a connection with someone in the media, such as Keanu Reeves, it could then be publicized and therefore recognized as an actual possibility.  Although there would be a preliminary backlash to the idea, it could be accepted eventually, just like Ellen.

There would be an initial counterattack from the heterosexual point of view, as well as the homosexual point of view.  This could be due to the heterosexual fear of the stigmatism, as well as the homosexual fear of loosing an affiliation with a group that reflects their personal identities.  However, the majority of people would eventually see the term as colloquial, which would ultimately allow for freedom of identity.
